Digital technology has made it easy to enjoy color photography. But no one can deny that the allure of a beautiful B&W print is magic. The allure is elusive. This is particularly true noting that most photo labs now print B&W images with equipment engineered for color and using color chemistry. The allure is gone. Our studio's Epson 9900 is a state of the art printer and produces both exceptional color and B&W prints. There is little doubt in my mind that our print studio's Epson 9900 produces exceptional prints that exceed the quality of most photo labs. There is no color shift and for B&W images printed on the 9900, the allure is preserved.
But there's more. For B&W fine art printing, there is yet another level.
My background in photography came from medium format film and developing images in the darkroom. With that in mind, I always wanted more from my B&W images for my portrait and landscape work. And that's when I decided to incorporate the K7 B&W Piezography Master Printing System. K7 means seven shades of black pigmented ink, compared to the state of the art Epson 9900 with its three shades of black. K7 B&W Piezography pushes the envelope of quality further yet.
Carmel Fine Art Printing & Reproduction is one of the relatively few commercial printers to offer premium B&W K7 Piezography print services to its clients. Premium B&W prints up to forty inches in width are made using a specially converted Epson 9890 printer with the K7 Piezography MPS selenium inkset. This printer produces truly exceptional B&W prints reminiscent of an air-dried B&W fiber print. The full allure of exceptional B&W imagery is realized. This is printmaking.
Premium B&W K7 prints are available on both fine art matte papers and glossy papers. Glossy B&W piezography prints require a "second printing" of gloss optimizer. This gloss optimizer is also excellent on color prints produced by the studio's Epson P9000 (and is available by special order).

K7 B&W Piezography MPS File Preparation
Process your Raw digital file into a 16bit full resolution Tiff file, Adobe98 color space. You may convert your digital file (or film scan) to B&W as you like. Work with the image at full resolution. I like to use Capture One Pro 8 and Photoshop with Nik's Silver Efex 2.
You may crop to format size, but do not resize, interpolate, or resample the file. The printer uses QTR and will size your image for print as closely as possible.
Flatten your file. In the Adobe98 color space, convert the file into a single channel grayscale file. Save as a 16bit Tiff file.
Contact the print studio to place your order. Send the file by Hightail, Dropbox, or use the high res upload option found on the Upload to Print page.
Contact the studio at (831) 626-1844 if you need assistance with preparing your file for print.
